New edition of HPC-Europa3 mobility project for researchers

3 JULY 2017 - The HPC-Europa3 project provides funding for researchers working on computational science to visit HPC centres and/or scientific hosts in Europe to foster new scientific collaborations. Visitors are funded for travel and accommodation during their stay, and they are provided with an amount of computing time suitable for the approved project. Next closing date for applications is Thursday 7th September.

MareNostrum 4 begins operation

29 JUNE 2017- The MareNostrum supercomputer is beginning operation and will start executing applications for scientific research on the 1st of July. MareNostrum 4, hosted by Barcelona Supercomputing Center, is entirely aimed at generating scientific knowledge and its computer architecture has been called ‘the most diverse and interesting in the world’ by international experts. It will provide more than 60 million computing hours per quarter to RES users.

Vicente Matellán Olivera, new General Director of the Fundación Centro de Supercomputación de Castilla y León

23 JUNE 2017- Dr Matellán was appointed General Director in the last board of trustees meeting on June 20. He replaces Antonio Ruiz-Falcó, who had this position for the last two years.

Fernando Martín, user of RES resources, has been awarded the Rey Jaime I prize of Basic Research

15 JUNE 2015 - Dr Martín is professor in the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Science – UAM.The prize is a recognition for his contribution in the establishment of Attochemistry theoretical foundations.

Upcoming events
18 JUL 2017 High Performance Computing and Modeling of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences Location: Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
Description: This scientific seminar, which has the support of the Spanish Supercomputing Network, will address various issues related to the simulation of the terrestrial system both from the scientific and computational point of view.
27 SEP 2017 Marine Services and Supercomputing: experiences and future challenges Location: Santiago de Compostela
Description: This scientific seminar, supported by the RES, will be organized the day before the RES Users' Meeting in the same venue. Further information will be published soon.
28 SEP 2017 11th RES Users' Meeting & 6th HPC Advisory Council Conference Location: Santiago de Compostela
Description: The RES organizes every year a users’ meeting to inform about RES resources and procedures, and to provide information about the access methods to RES and PRACE . This event aims to be a discussion forum among RES users, technical staff, the access committee and the users’ committee. In addition, the scientific parallel sessions and the poster session will promote dissemination of highlighted research results of RES users.

Research highlighted results

The mystery of why DNA rolls up when it is stretched and RNA unwinds

A study published in the journal PNAS describes what happens at the atomic level when a double-stranded nucleic acid molecule is stretched. Using computer simulation, scientists found a way to explain why DNA coils when it is stretched, whereas double-stranded RNA unwinds. The authors of this work are researchers from the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología of the CSIC (CNB-CSIC) and the Institute of Physics of Condensed Matter at the Autonomous University of Madrid (IFIMAC-UAM). They have performed the simulations in MinoTauro supercomputer through a RES grant.

An engineered enzyme to synthesize carbohydrates

The research group "Quantum Simulation of Biological Processes", from the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the UB (IQTCUB), have found the way to modify an enzyme (glycosidase) which usually degrades carbohydrates so that it acts reversely and synthesizes carbohydrates. Moreover, this synthesis has been reached with a new reaction that had not been observed in glycosidases yet, which is a variation from a reaction called front-face or SNi-like. The research group, leaded by Carme Rovira, has published this work in Nature Chemical Biology and is user of RES resources since 2006.
