High Performance Computing and Modeling of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences

Scientific seminar

This scientific seminar, which has the support of the Spanish Supercomputing Network, will address various issues related to the simulation of the terrestrial system both from the scientific and computational point of view.

The modeling of the terrestrial system is one of the most demanding problems from the point of view of resources for high performance computing systems. The simulations of the climate or the ocean need a large number of hours of calculation, using very heterogeneous systems at times (CPUs, GPUs, etc.) and require a high storage capacity and speed of data transmission. The Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES) solved these problems for a long time, providing resources to the research groups that need it. However, there is not always a complete view of the implemented solutions or of the models available and supported in the RES systems.
In this day will be a review on various issues related to the simulation of the Earth system both from the scientific and computational point of view. We will discuss results interpretation, optimization, new technological approaches as well as transmission of this knowledge to society. In addition, the status of these issues will be discussed in RES.
