Glossary

Cloud Computing: Cloud computing is where one can access a lot of computer power from a desktop or laptop computer, but the actual calculation is done remotely on another more powerful server or supercomputer.

Data Management Plan (DMP):  A data management plan (DMP) is a written document that describes the data you expect to acquire or generate during the course of a research project, how you will manage, describe, analyze, and store those data, and what mechanisms you will use at the end of your project to share and preserve your data.

Data Manager: The role of a Data Manager is to supervise a company's numerous data systems and networks. Their duties include organizing, storing, and analyzing company data, while also safeguarding a company's security and confidentiality standards.

Dataset: Group of files, of the same or different formats, with homogeneous or heterogeneous content, with the same technical needs in terms of storage, permissions, services, etc.

HPC: High Performance Computing. HPC commonly refers to large-scale high performance computing resources, including storage and visualization systems.

Node: In the RES, we call all the research centers that are part of the RES nodes. The coordination of the centers can either be of supercomputing nodes,  data nodes, or both.

Petabyte: A petabyte is one quadrillion bytes of storage capacity.

Petaflop:  A petaflop is a measure of supercomputer speed, and means the ability to perform one quadrillion calculations per second.

Petascale: In computing, a petascale refers to a computer system capable of reaching performance in excess of one petaflops, i.e. one quadrillion floating point operations per second.

Principal Investigator: The individual or individuals who are the lead researchers for a grant (i.e., head of the laboratory, research group leader, etc.)

Processors or cores: The processing part of a computer's central processing unit, or CPU, made up of the control unit and the arithmetic logic unit (ALU). The control unit retrieves instructions from the computer's memory. The ALU performs the mathematical calculations. Supercomputers are made up of thousands of processor cores. A multi-core processor is an integrated circuit to which two or more processors have been attached increased performance, such as simultaneous processing of multiple tasks, as well as reduced power consumption.

Data Project: The scientific endeavor(s) with which the dataset is associated. The project may also cover a scientific project that continuously creates new datasets.
