🌩️Can a computer learn like humans to predict where a hailstorm will strike? 🌩️

Hailstorms are highly localized extreme events: one town can be hit while a neighbouring town barely sees a cloud. They have a severe socio-economic impact, but they are very difficult to simulate accurately. 

The team led by Jordi Barcons Roca and Iciar Guerrero Calzas from Mitiga Solutions addresses this challenge by combining a widely used weather model (WRF) with a Genetic Algorithm on hashtag#MareNostrum5 at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

🔎𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞? 🔎 

🔵 They evolved weather model configurations across millions of possibilities using a genetic algorithm, identifying the optimal setup for hail prediction
🔵 The simulations closely matched observations, validating the approach
🔵 This method can be extended to other extreme weather events, helping identify hazards and mitigate risks
