🩸Can existing oncologic drugs treat rare, congenital vascular diseases?🩸

Vascular anomalies are rare disorders that cause an abnormal growth of blood and lymph vessels anywhere in the body. They are present from birth and can't currently be fully treated. In the rarest cases, known as orphan anomalies, there's no dedicated treatment at all.

The team led by Sandra D. Castillo and Giancarlo Castellano (Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu) tackled this challenge by analysing the DNA and gene activity of blood vessel cells with #MareNostrum5 at Barcelona Supercomputing Center

🔎𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝?🔎

🔵 Different vascular anomalies shared molecular vulnerabilities, even in cases where the genetic cause is still unknown
🔵 These findings open the door to repurposing existing oncology drugs for orphan vascular anomalies that can't currently be treated
