🌋Is it possible to find the best place to drill for geothermal energy before spending millions doing it?🌋

Geothermal energy coming from magma's heat is renewable, continuous and low-carbon and, in volcanic regions, it can power entire communities. But finding where to drill is costly and uncertain, specially when a volcanic area barely shows itself at the surface.

The team led by Jeremias L. from IIEP Baires (UBA - CONICET) studied Cerro Blanco (Argentina), a very active volcanic system that doesn't have surface activity. They used advanced 3D numerical models with #MareNostrum5 at Barcelona Supercomputing Center

🔎𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱? 🔎

🔵 They developed a reproducible 3D tool that simulates how heat and fluids move underground, up to 3km deep
🔵 The tool will be also tested in La Palma (Spain) to assess its scalability beyond the Cerro Blanco complex., in collaboration with Geociencias Barcelona - CSIC (GEO3BCN-CSIC)
