David Éxposito (UC3M) — Development of a simulator that simulates the spread of COVID-19, influenza-like illnesses (ILI), and acute respiratory infections (ARI)

💡A new RES success story about prevention of #COVID19 spread 💡 

📋"Development of a simulator that simulates the spread of COVID-19, influenza-like illnesses (ILI), and acute respiratory infections (ARI)" led by David Expósito Singh from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. 

The research team led by David E. Singh and in collaboration with Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the Centro Nacional de Epidemiología have given support to health authorities in both predicting the impact of the virus and evaluating contention measures. 

🖥 Thanks to RES Supercomputer #Agustina and its predecessor #Memento from Instituto de Biocomputacion y Fisica de Sistemas Complejos - BIFI, they started to model the propagation of SARS-CoV-2 in early 2020 using EpiGraph, a software originally designed to simulate the spread of influenza that requires using parallel computing infrastructure. The team has had uninterrupted access to RES resources since then through our open competitive calls, which allowed them to perform the studies. 

The data to enable simulations of the COVID-19 spread was provided by Centro Nacional de Epidemiología, and served to work in collaboration with Ministerio de Sanidad to early define the vaccination strategy that was to be followed. Particularly, the team evaluated the effectiveness of each strategy about which groups should be vaccinated first even before the first vaccines were to arrive in Spain. 

The simulations also allowed to estimate the number of cases and to evaluate vaccination strategies in the long and mid term at a European level, which was done in collaboration with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in the year 2021.
