✈️Can we predict how aircraft pollutants disperse?✈️
Aviation contributes to air pollution and climate change through the emission of pollutants that affect air quality and human health. Understanding how these emissions disperse is crucial to assess their environmental impact and develop strategies to reduce it.
A team formed by Swapnil Singh, Eduardo J. Pérez-Sánchez, Guillaume Houzeaux, and Daniel Mira from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Marco Fossati, Bryn Jones, Scott Bennie, and Zachary Ciera from the University of Strathclyde has modelled how aircraft wake rolls up into vortices using #MareNostrum5.
🔎𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞?🔎
🔹 High-fidelity simulations captured how pollutants disperse behind both conventional and high aspect ratio wings
🔹 The method successfully predicted the formation and evolution of aircraft wake vortices
🔹 The results revealed a direct link between wing design, vortex behaviour, and pollutant dispersion
